In simple terms, a VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone is a device that provides a telephone service using the internet rather than copper wires.

So, what are the advantages of VOIP phone systems?

Firstly, there are cost savings associated with a VOIP phone system compared to the traditional copper-based PBX (Private Branch Exchange) system. The infrastructure to set up a VOIP system is significantly cheaper, and the hardware requirement may be just one ethernet connection with softphones not requiring any additional connection. Call charges often work out to be cheaper, with geography being far less of an issue, and the cost of internal staff calls is removed. In addition, the costs of repair and maintenance are significantly reduced compared to PBX systems.

Secondly, there is an inherent flexibility and portability in VOIP phones which makes them ideal for today’s mobile workforce. Calls can be made and received from anywhere, if you have the software or App and an Internet connection. Working on the move and remote working is now far more straightforward.

Finally, VOIP phone systems are easily scalable, so as an organisation grows, the phone system easily grows with them. With a traditional phone system, expanding the phone system to incorporate more users is a pretty major undertaking, and costly too. With a VOIP phone system, new users can be easily added, as can additional services and features that the phone system provides.
